The Kalimeen-Isokangas hiking area is located a couple of peninkulma east of downtown Oulu. This area, which has been preserved in its natural state, attracts many hikers. There are three hiking trails in the area; the Korpilampi Game Trail offers a glimpse of the environment from the perspective of wildlife management.

The nature trails at Pilpasuo challenge hikers with their various activities. The Fun Trail is suitable for families with small children. The 7-kilometer Sensory Trail features a lean-to, two campfire sites, and boardwalks crossing wetlands.

Along the 12-kilometer hiking trail in Vitsasuo, there are two birdwatching towers and several lean-tos. As many as 150 hectares of the bog have remained undrained.

In the undulating esker landscape of Rokua, you can get a glimpse of the last ice age. The park is part of the UNESCO Geoparks Network thanks to its esker and dune formations. The old, natural pine forests here are among the northernmost locations in Finland where esker vegetation occurs. The fire watchman’s cabin at the foot of the Enitsen fire tower now serves as a wilderness shelter.

The easily navigable terrain is ideal for day hikes or hikes lasting a couple of days. The 8-kilometer Rokuansydän trail offers a glimpse into the area’s fascinating geology, winding through sand dunes and passing Finland’s largest sinkhole, Syvyydenkaivo. The 100-kilometer Tervareitistö hiking trail follows the banks of the Oulujoki River all the way to Oulu.

The Oulujärvi Hiking Area is located on the shores of the Kainuu Sea. The lake’s open waters are the largest in the country. They are separated by Manamansalo, whose northwestern part, along with rocky islets and sandy-shored islands, forms the recreation area. Traces of the Ice Age, including eskers and lagoon lakes, are visible everywhere. The area is part of the Rokua Geopark. The fauna represents a transitional zone: the red-necked grebe does not nest on other inland waters, and the Arctic tern and red-necked phalarope are not found further south. Rainbow trout, whitefish, lake trout, and brown trout are stocked in the forest ponds favored by anglers.

The hiking trails that start from the Manamansalo campground wind through open lichen-covered heaths as well as along the shoreline cliffs. Along the trails and on some of the islands, there are campfire sites, lean-tos, shelters, and cooking shelters; on Reimikari, there is even a wilderness cabin.
